I read this article by Susan Edmunds in the Weekend Herald and I am glad somebody supports my views about exercise and weight loss. Susan writes about the stop-go method to lose weight. Stop-go is exactly the same thing as burst of exertion followed by a recovery period. It is the best proven way to burn fat and calorie and build muscle thus having your abdominal muscles popping out once you remove all the fat that covers them.
Susan goes ahead and explains in her article, titled: ‘Stop/start Tactics Burst through the Exercise Plateau’ about the benefits of periods of high intensity exercises, called bursts of exertion and periods of rest or low intensity, called recovery periods. So the bursts of exertions works your anaerobic system which uses the energy stored in your muscles. This will make oxygen debt and lactic acid build up, that gives you the burning feeling in your muscles during the high intensity workout. Then while your recovery period, your heart and lungs compensate this debt of oxygen but they also breaking down the lactic acid. The oxygen is used to convert stored carbs into energy, rather than become fat.
In addition to this, Susan also explains what I say here again and again: interval training, which are bursts of exertion followed by rest periods are far more effective in burning fat and calorie than traditional cardio exercises. Also – interval training stops your body from getting injured as they train the body at different levels of bursts, or intensity, and that stops the body from getting ‘comfortable’ with on type of intensity. It stimulates your body to cope with all types of intensity, makes it stronger. Also – it trains your heart to go on various intensities, which makes it stronger and healthier.
A good starting interval training could be something like this: a set of – 10 push-ups, 8 body squats, 8 lunges in each leg, 8 step-ups in each leg, and 30 seconds mountain climbers. Do these exercises back to back with no rest what so ever, and allow up to 1.5 minutes recovery period between sets. In the first two weeks you may do two sets of this regime and then increase to 5 sets. If you do not know how to perform any of these exercises properly – please comment on this article and I will reply to each of your comments separately with a description. Good luck with your progress.
